Ford Considers Scrapping ElectricVersion of F-150 Truck
Ford is considering discontinuing its electric F‑150 Lightning after racking up roughly $13 billion in EV losses since 2023, reflecting broader industry headwinds for large electric pickups as demand cools, costs remain high, and incentives fade.
Production—already paused due to an aluminum shortage—may stay idle as Ford pivots to smaller, more affordable EVs, echoing moves by GM and Stellantis to reassess electric truck plans amid Tesla Cybertruck’s sales slump and Rivian’s cutbacks. Dealer feedback and sales data underscore the shift: in October, Ford’s U.S. EV sales fell 24% year over year, dealers sold about 66,000 gas F‑Series versus roughly 1,500 Lightnings, and mainstream truck buyers balked at prices nearing $90,000 and range constraints under towing and cold-weather conditions, pushing the market toward hybrids and compact EVs.
