Douglas Hewlett is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Arent Fox LLP and a member of the Complex Litigation practice group. He represents clients in commercial litigation matters in state and federal court, and international arbitrations.

Before joining Arent Fox, Douglas was an associate in an international law firm. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Chief Judge K. Michael Moore of the US District Court, Southern District of Florida. Douglas also served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Consuelo B. Marshall of the US District Court, Central District of California, and served as a certified extern in the US Attorney’s Office Criminal Division, Central District of California, where he successfully argued an opposition to a motion to suppress and won a CVB trial.

Retailer Cashes In On Refund Claims for Unredeemed Store Credits

Store credits not redeemable for cash are not unclaimed property under California's Unclaimed Property Law (UPL). In Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. v. Chiang, Case No. 37-2014-12491 (Super Ct. San Diego, Cal. Mar. 4, 2016), the Superior Court issued summary judgment in favor of the national retail chain, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., holding that merchandise credits not redeemable for cash are not subject to the UPL and also qualify for an exemption under the UPL for gift certificates that do not expire.
