Kim Quoted on Trump’s Auto Tariffs Burden in Inside US Trade’s Daily Report
Inside US Trade’s Daily Report
James Kim was quoted on how the Trump Administration’s new 25% tariffs on cars and auto parts are prompting automakers and suppliers to reassess the North American automotive supply chain.
James said, “This is going to be horribly complicated for [original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)] and suppliers who have to provide that info to OEMs.”
Adding further uncertainty into the auto supply chain is the petition process laid out in the proclamation, designed to allow domestic producers or trade associations representing them to petition to have additional auto parts covered by the tariffs.
The US Department of Commerce has 90 days to establish a process for adding parts, but the proclamation makes no mention of a process to remove auto parts.
James said, “In this environment, I would be skeptical Commerce would create a process to remove items.”
